Training Courses

I have been fortunate to have received training from and attended workshops hosted by several 'Master Photographers' over the years and I hold a Licentiate qualification with the Society of International Nature & Wildlife. I like nothing more than to pass on the knowledge that I have gained from this and my own personal experiences. I offer courses for people at beginner and intermediate level, for those who are new to photography, perhaps having just acquired their first DSRL camera and maybe haven't got past using one in automatic or program mode, or those who maybe just want to have a refresher of the basics. I also offer a session based around portraiture using studio lighting in my own home studio. If you require more advanced or specialist training then I'd be happy to refer you to one of my photography colleagues who offer these training opportunities.

Unlike some providers where you are one of a large group of delegates, I only make 4 places available per course so you get much more personal support. Daytime sessions usually start around 10:30am and last approximately 4 hours. Evening sessions start around 6pm and last approximatey 3 hours.  I can also offer one-to-one sessions to cover topics of your choice. Please email for more information.

The DSLR basics course covers topics such as the exposure triangle (ISO/Aperture/ShutterSpeed), focussing techniques,  composition, long exposures, using filters and post processing images. If delegates wish for tuition on other topics then I will try to fit it into the schedule so please email in advance if that is the case.

The Lightroom basics course is designed to get you familiar with the Lightroom interface, importing your photos, managing your photo catalogue, using the Lightroom photo editing tools and exporting images for use in other applications or to post on social media, etc.

These courses cost £25 each to attend and are usually held at my home studio in Stockton-On-Tees.

A future course will cover the basics of flash photography (details below), including using simple studio lighting setups. It will be suitable for photographers who are already comfortable with the basics but would like to learn about on-off camera flash and studio flash or who wish to refresh their knowledge. The cost for this course will be £35 per person and it will be held at my home studio in Stockton-On-Tees. The date for this session will be by arrangement with those who wish to take part so please email me if you wish to register an interest in this course.

Both courses will include numerous photography exercises for you to do in parallel with the topics covered. All you need to bring with you is your DSLR camera and favourite lens plus a compatible flashgun if you have one. By all means bring a tripod, additional lenses and your favourite accessories if you wish. Refreshments are provided but you are welcome to bring your own snacks if you wish.
